Leaflet #1 - £100

The front page of the leaflet is a crowd photo of Greg Stone and Dunk MacMahon meeting voters in Sedgefield. The text, big and bold and amber, accompanying the photo reads:
VOTE GREG STONE AND THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS
FOR CLEANER POLITICS
FOR CIVIL LIBERTIES
FOR AN IRAQ WAR INQUIRY
TO PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT
TO FIGHT POVERTY AND CREATE OPPORTUNITY
TO FUND OUR SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS

At the bottom, a list of contact details and the mandatory legal text.

The back of the leaflet has the following format. On the left of the page, a letter from Sir Dunk, accompanied by a photo of Dunk and Greg meeting voters. At the bottom, a small cut out, where the voter can write in with casework or questions, donate, or volunteer. On the right, there are ten bullet points laying out Lib Dem plans. Throughout are photos of local Lib Dem activists.

The letter reads as follows:
“To the voters of Sedgefield,

This by-election is important. Not only will it determine who represents you in Parliament for the next few years, but it will also send a strong national message. I urge you to use this chance to reject the spin and complacency of Labour, the ideological fixations of the Conservatives, and the mistakes of the Blair era, and vote for a fresh start. Greg Stone is your local Liberal Democrat candidate, and the candidate to lead that fresh start.

We are the true opposition party. From fighting for public accountability in the government's bank nationalisation programme to leading the calls for an inquiry into the Iraq War, from opposing the disastrous ID cards scheme to campaigning against Labour’s increasingly nasty form of politics, we are holding this government to account. As your local MP, Greg Stone will add another essential voice to this effort, making sure government works for the people of Sedgefield.

And we are a government-in-waiting. On issues from education and skills to welfare and poverty, from climate change to political reform and from healthcare to civil liberties, we are offering the principled, practical alternative to this government's policies. As your local MP, Greg Stone will help advance and shape this alternative program of government.

Imagine the signal it would send if Tony Blair's old constituency returned a Liberal Democrat MP. That will dramatically increase the pressure on government to respect civil liberties, call for an independent and comprehensive Iraq War inquiry, and make sure economic growth is equitable and sustainable.

Every Liberal Democrat MP is a champion of their communities. Greg Stone will continue this fine tradition, including championing investment in local schools and hospitals and much needed action on climate change. As your MP, Sedgefield will always be his priority.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Remember to vote in this by-election, and thank you in advance if you decide to vote Liberal Democrat.

Yours,
Duncan MacMahon
Leader of the Liberal Democrats”

On the right, a ten point plan laying out national Lib Dem proposals.
THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS ARE LAYING OUT A BOLD AND PROGRESSIVE PLAN FOR BRITAIN:
  1. An Iraq War inquiry to give the public the truth - and the only major party to oppose the Iraq War
  2. Protecting civil liberties - scrapping ID cards and funding our police instead
  3. Cleaning up our politics by ending cronyism and introducing proportional representation
  4. Ending Labour-Tory regional inequalities and underinvestment
  5. The boldest environmental agenda of the three main parties, creating a green energy and fighting climate change
  6. More funding for education - reducing classroom sizes and opposing tuition fees
  7. Reforming welfare to end benefits dependency and fight poverty
  8. More power to local communities and more investment in local public services
  9. Investing in our NHS - including mental health and prevention
  10. A foreign policy that makes a safer and fairer world - no more mistakes like the Iraq War

Back
I’m on your side
because I believe in a new approach. One that makes our public services better together with our communities. One that gives you a say over what powers to hand to Brussels. One that ends the spin and sleaze of the Blair years and puts the focus back on you, your family and your communities.

On [date], that change can start here in Sedgefield. Can I count on you?

Better education for all ages
Our Opportunity Agenda is all about giving everyone in this country the education they need to succeed:
- With Academies, free schools and City Technological Colleges, we’ll make schools work for all pupils, all of the time.
- Our skills fund provides you with the life-long resources you need to keep investing in your next step.

Tackling climate change together
Communities up and down this country can tackle the problem of climate change. They just need the government on-side.
- The Conservatives have an ambitious target to reduce 80% carbon emissions by 2050.
- We will help you pay for generating your own energy and insulating your home with our Green Deals.

In our national interest
The government wants to give you a one-time say on the Lisbon Treaty. It shouldn't just be a one-time say over what powers we hand to Brussels - we will give you a say every time.
- A referendum on any future transfer of sovereignty.
- We need to re-evaluate what Brussels does. If member states can do something better, powers should flow back.
