SNP Moray by-election Key Messages List

1. The SNP strives to stand up for the interests of rural Scotland: It is important to the SNP that we champion our rural communities such as here in Moray. The SNP wishes to continue to build rural Scotland's future and invest in rural communities, infrastructure and livelihoods.
2. The SNP have a tried and tested local record over the past 30 years: The SNP first won Moray back in 1987 and through strong local representation and community activism we have ensured that the seat of Moray can have a strong voice in parliament, as it has enjoyed since 1987. Unlike the Tories and Labour we have a record to show that we will not take the voters in Moray for granted and a new SNP MP for Moray will be part of a 56-member strong Scottish parliamentary team at Westminster which will fight for the likes of Moray and Scotland as a whole.
3. A strong and independent local voice: Unlike a Tory or Labour MP, an SNP MP for Moray will continue to give this constituency a strong and independent local voice at Westminster. Unlike with a Tory or Labour MP, who would be at the mercy of their party’s English dominated leadership, an SNP would continue to give a strong commitment to Scottish affairs and would provide representation to the benefit of Moray and not to the Tory or Labour parties who cannot claim to be the voices of the Scottish people at Westminster.
4. Supporting local agriculture: The SNP recognises that agriculture plays a highly significant role in the rural economy of areas like Moray and we remain committed to directly supporting farmers, agriculture workers and crofters. We now pay £440mn in direct support to Scotland’s near 20,000 farmers and crofters - we remain committed to this figure and we will continue to support Scotland’s farmers in areas like Moray. The SNP has utilised a substantial part of the Scottish Rural Development Programme to support farming and we once again remain committed to this use of funds.
5. Sustaining and protecting our fisheries: The SNP remains committed to supporting the viability and profitability of Scotland’s and Moray’s fisheries - through sustaining existing markets and developing new markets by allocating £77mn to support over a thousand projects. The SNP will continue to fight to ensure that the Scottish fishing quota is retained in the hands of active Scottish fishermen and that quota speculation is ended. The SNP will set a landings target for Scotland and all Scottish fishing boats in order to ensure more fish are landed in Scotland to create jobs and support local businesses connected to our fishing communities.
6. Fighting for and protecting our Health Service: Under the majority SNP government at Holyrood, we have seen recording funding of the NHS. This amounts to a record £13bn budget for Scotland’s NHS. This means that there are now more staff than ever before and patients in Scotland are getting some of the fastest and best treatment anywhere in the UK. Our NHS is something that is precious to all Scots and we in the SNP will continue to protect our NHS from Tory cuts and will help our NHS nurture and grow throughout the time the SNP is in govt. An SNP MP for Moray will continue to fight for and protect our NHS and will fight any and all Tory attempts to cut and butcher our NHS.
7. A strong and safe Moray: It is vital for the people of Moray and Scotland that our communities are safer and stronger. Every member of society has the right to feel safe and have confidence in their police and fire services. With the SNP here in Moray we will fight for strengthening the police force here in Moray and across the country - we have done this while in government in Holyrood with an extra £100mn being added to the police revenue budget. The SNP has also fought to strengthen our police service by providing it with an extra thousand officers helping to keep crime to a  41-year low. Only an SNP will fight for these policies.
8. Reject the Tories and their harmful policies: The Tories have been nothing but bad for Scotland and Moray. The SNP government at Holyrood has stood firm against Tory efforts to harm and weaken Scotland on multiple occasions. When the Tories tried to cut Scotland’s budget by £7bn, the SNP ensured that they were seen off. The SNP has been proud to fight against Tory efforts to curtail civil liberties and union rights with the party standing up for workers’ rights at every turn. The Tories only want to win in Moray in order to split opposition to them in Scotland and in order to add yet another seat to their majority. Help reject the Tories and their harmful policies by backing the SNP here in Moray and help keep Moray’s representation in the only strongly pro-Scottish party and voice at Westminster - the SNP.
9. Labour can't be trusted: Labour revealed their hand up here in 2014 when they threw their lot in with the Tories in the referendum campaign and signalled their support for maintaining the Union even at the threat of Tory austerity and cuts being brought in north of the border. Only the SNP can stand united in a fight against Tory austerity and unlike Labour will not sell out its principles for cheap short term gain. Labour’s record in govt. Between 1999 and 2007 was mixed - that isn’t good enough for Scotland and it certainly isn’t good enough for Moray. Only the SNP can offer a proven record and tried and tested leadership for Moray.
10. A strong voice for Scotland: It is imperative that Moray gets a strong voice in Westminster. Yet another Tory or Labour MP would just mean yet another number among many in their parliamentary teams. The SNP Westminster team has representatives from all corners and regions of Scotland which strengthens it as the strong voice for Scotland at Westminster. The SNP is the only party that has presented comprehensive policies regarding agriculture and issues which affects Moray deeply. Only with the SNP will Moray have strong local representation for Westminster.

Former First Minister of Scotland and MP for Gordon Alex Salmond gives a speech in Moray arguing for an SNP victory in the by-election in the seat

"Ladies and Gentlemen, its a great pleasure to be back up here and to be supporting our party's candidate for here in Moray. I first began my political career contesting and winning the neighbouring seat of Banff and Buchan back in 1987, a seat that is now held by our party's Westminster leader Eilidh NicEachainn. At that election we also saw the SNP gain Moray from the Tories as well. Since then both seats have awarded the SNP with a good, strong solid base of support. I believe this is in part due to the fact that unlike the Tories or Labour, the SNP has strong coherent policies when it comes to agricultural and rural affairs which directly affect and improve the lives of people up here in the Grampians. With the SNP you have an ally who seeps to stand up for the interests of rural Scotland and has a record of having done so here in Moray over the past nearly thirty years.

The SNP is also committed to supporting local agriculture in places such as here in Moray. The SNP recognises that agriculture plays a highly significant role in the rural economy of areas like Moray and we remain committed to directly supporting farmers, agriculture workers and crofters. The SNP is also committed to sustaining and protecting our fisheries and remains committed to supporting the viability and profitability of Scotland’s and Moray’s fisheries - through sustaining existing markets and developing new markets by allocating £77 million to support over a thousand projects. The SNP will continue to fight to ensure that the Scottish fishing quota is retained in the hands of active Scottish fishermen and that quota speculation is ended. Regarding fishing targets, the SNP will set a landings target for Scotland and all Scottish fishing boats in order to ensure more fish are landed in Scotland to create jobs and support local businesses connected to our fishing communities.

On areas outside of agriculture and rural affairs, the Scottish National Party also has a comprehensive set of policies in place to help ensure that the people of Moray continue to have a safe, healthy and strong community and family life. The SNP remains committed to fighting for an protecting our National Health Service up here in Scotland. Under the SNP government at Holyrood, we have seen levels of funding of the National Health Service hit record levels. That means that there are now more staff than ever before and that patients in Scotland are now receiving some of the best and fastest treatment anywhere in the United Kingdom, far ahead of the Health Services in Wales and England run by Labour and the Tories respectively. Our NHS is something that is precious to all Scots and we in the SNP will continue to protect our NHS from Tory cuts and will help our NHS nurture and grow throughout the time it is in power at Holyrood.

This is also extended to Westminster, where a re-elected Scottish National MP for Moray will continue to fight like all fifty five other SNP MPs have for and to protect our National Health Service from Tory attempts to cut, divide and ultimately sell off our NHS. Having a strong and safe Moray is also a vital area for the Scottish National Party. It is extremely important for the people of Moray to feel safe and secure in their communities and neighbourhoods. Every member of society has the right to feel safe and have confidence in their police and fire services.

With the Scottish National Party you know exactly what you get with our policies on the police and fire services. We will fight as we have for years for a strengthened police force here and across the country. We have pushed this issue while in government at Holyrood with an extra £100 million being added to the police revenue budget. Added to that is the SNP's pledge to continue to strengthen and add to our police service by providing it with an extra-thousand officers - this is something that we have done at Holyrood which has helped to keep crime at a low level not seen in over forty years. With an Scottish National MP here in Moray, you will get what we pledge - an MP who will fight to ensure that we are tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime, to quote that old Labour slogan from twenty years ago.

The SNP pitch, so to speak, boils down to the simple fact, do you want a strong and independent local voice for Moray and Scotland here? Another Tory or Labour MP elected here on Thursday would simply mean yet another number among many in their parliamentary party. With the SNP, Moray will be as it has been since 1987 - an area with a strong independent voice in parliament, among a larger parliamentary team which is committed to representing Scotland at Westminster. So on Thursday I ask you all to go to the polls and vote for our great candidate here in Moray to keep and maintain strong, independent and local minded representation at Westminster.

Thank you all and don't forget to vote SNP on Thursday for good local representation for Moray!"

SNP Westminster leader Eilidh NicEachainn joints the former First Minister and Westminster colleague to argue for an SNP victory in the Moray by-election

"Ladies and Gentlemen it is great to be back here Elgin and to once again be making the case for why the people of Moray should return an SNP candidate for parliament. This area has long had a tradition of good representation from the Scottish National Party dating back to the mid-1970s when this area elected two Scottish National MPs to parliament between 1974 and 1979. Ever since 1987 the SNP has represented Moray at Westminster and has a tried and tested local record since then. Unlike the Tories and Labour we have a record to show that we will not take the voters in Moray for granted and a new SNP MP for Moray will be part of a 56-member strong Scottish parliamentary team at Westminster which will fight for the likes of Moray and Scotland as a whole.

The Tories and Labour will come up here and campaign for a 'change' and argue that its time for them to have their chance to represent Moray. Yet in the end its just yet another seat to add to their parliamentary party. For the Tories, Moray would be just yet another seat out of 330 others - for Labour the figure is only marginally better with Moray being only one in 232. With the SNP you have got and will continue to get a strong and independent local voice in parliament. Unlike with a Tory or Labour MP, who would be at the mercy of their party’s English dominated leadership, an SNP MP would continue to give a strong commitment to Scottish affairs and would provide representation to the benefit of Moray and not to the Tory or Labour parties who cannot claim to be the voices of the Scottish people at Westminster. The Tories in government at Westminster have been nothing but bad news for Moray and Scotland as a whole.

Labour can also not be trusted to give good representation to the people of Moray.  Labour revealed their hand up here in 2014 when they threw their lot in with the Tories in the referendum campaign and signalled their support for maintaining the Union even at the threat of Tory austerity and cuts being brought in north of the border.

Put simply, Moray needs and will continue to have a strong voice in parliament under the Scottish National Party. We in the SNP believe this is imperative for Moray and the people who live here at Westminster. Unlike the Tories or Labour, we in the SNP aim to not take the people we represent for granted. Taking for granted the Scottish people is an anathema to us, considering our pledge to represent all Scottish people in Westminster to stand up for Scotland and against the harmful Tory govt. policies.
The SNP has led the way on a variety of matters that are close to our hearts here in Moray. On matters such as the interests of rural Scotland that is something that is close to my heart representing Banff and Buchan right next door to here - the SNP leads the way on issues like this compared to Labour and the Tories.

We in the SNP believe it is important to continue to champion rural communities such as here in Moray at Holyrood and in Westminster. The SNP wishes to continue to build rural Scotland's future and invest in rural communities, infrastructure and livelihoods. Only the SNP has pressed ahead with measures to support local agriculture and sustaining and protecting our fisheries. As we presented in our manifesto for the elections to Holyrood, we in the SNP are proud of our payment of over £400 million in direct support for Scotland's near 20,000 farmers and crofters. We remain committed to this figure and we will continue to support Scotland’s farmers in areas like Moray. The SNP has put the interests and affairs of those who live in rural Scotland paramount at Holyrood and at Westminster - I hope that you all will continue to have confidence in the SNP to continue to represent this great constituency and will vote to return our great candidate here on Thursday.

Thank you all very much and don't forget to vote SNP on Thursday!"

Conservative Moray By-Election High Profile Event

JJ Kapplin - Secretary of State for Public Services

"Ladies and Gentlemen, it's an honour to return to Scotland to speak with you at this time, particularly as this is an opportunity for you, the people of Moray, to cement your voice in Westminster."

"For those of you who may have heard me speaking in Parliament, you'll know that I have always felt that party politics can often interrupt the important issues we face, particularly in local communities like Moray. Whilst I am here representing the Conservative Party, I would like to use this speech to talk to you about how our policies will help the constituency of Moray."

"First things first - I'd like to underline our commitment to RAF Lossiemouth. A lot of uncertainty remains in the world, and it has always been a strong, passionate belief of our party that we should support the armed forces across the United Kingdom for our national security. Lossiemouth has the dual benefit of being an important military installation, as well as a positive source of employment and industry for the region. The recent budget announced by the Chancellor ringfenced spending on the UK's armed forces, and we in the Conservative Party will protect RAF Lossiemouth and its important work going forward."

"Another benefit to this region as part of the Conservative Party's latest budget is £500 million which has been allocated for tidal energy projects in Scotland and the North. By investing in Green energy, we can offer new and innovative industries to Moray and to Scotland, boosting the economy, providing more sources of employment, whilst also supporting environmental conservation."

"We also understand the importance of international trade to Moray. There are many businesses here which benefit from international trade, as well as tourism, and so we wish to strengthen and reinforce those international links. With an important Referendum on the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union on the horizon, it's even more necessary that communities like Moray have their say - and the best way to do that is to have a Member of Parliament whose party is in Government, and who therefore has a direct link to the Government. My support for remaining within the EU aside, the Government has been making practical steps to ensure that whatever the outcome of the Referendum, the right policies and steps are in place to make sure regions like Moray have their concerns heard, their voices heard, and that action is taken to protect them."

"That commitment to international trade is also important because we recognize the role of the oil and gas industry to the region. Securing those lines of trade on an international scale is important, and our party pledges to keep the lines of trade between Moray, Scotland and the world open whatever the result of the EU Referendum. We will not allow question marks to hover over Moray during the EU Referendum, and having a Conservative Member of Parliament will reinforce the economic security that this constituency deserves."

"Finally, I think it's important to highlight this Government's continued, sensible approach to taxation. Those of you in Moray who own your own homes, those of you who have worked hard for the money you have, ought not to have the additional burden of high taxes. Our Chancellor, in this recent budget, stated that 'a dynamic economy is not one that taxes its citizenry into poverty but rather one that focuses on individual achievement and individual opportunity. ' Tax reductions put in place in this budget will reduced tax for working individuals by £250 in this year alone. A Conservative MP for Moray will safeguard an innovative, dynamic economy here in your region, and in Scotland, whilst ensuring that the wealth you have earned, is wealth you will keep."

"I know I began this speech by highlighting my belief in pragmatic politics, by not being too driven down by party politics. But I will say this. I have heard the SNP's speeches, here in Moray. Their speeches are all about the SNP. This election shouldn't be about the SNP. It should be about you, the people of Moray. I urge you to vote Conservative in this upcoming election election, because it's time you had a meaningful voice in Parliament who represents you, and who gives Moray its voice in Westminster. A Conservative MP will make you heard, loud and clear."

"Thank you."

Supporting Moray's International Trade - In the lead up to the Referendum on the United Kingdom's membership of the EU, the Conservative Government is planning for every eventuality, ensuring that economies that rely upon International Trade, such as Moray, will have no question marks hanging over them when the result is announced.

3. Giving Moray a meaningful voice in Westminster - A Conservative MP will offer Moray a more meaningful say for the area in Westminster. Unlike an SNP MP, who would offer little more than a protest, a Conservative MP will be able to listen and act on the needs of Moray,
