Christian is driven by a quest for equity, which he is always quick to point out is not the same as equality. While he was not the first of his family to earn a college degree, he was the first to be admitted to Oxford (Balliol College) where he earned his D.Phil. in 19th century British poetry. Following his graduation, he joined the faculty at the University of Liverpool, quickly ascending the ranks and earning a fairly stable following of graduate students. His good name and reputation caught the eye of the retiring Labour MP for his borough, and he was recruited to run for the open seat--which he won rather handily on the Labour ticket. His goals in Parliament are to secure equity of funding for public schools (as opposed to "public" schools), as well as open representation for the LGBTQIA+ community. He came out as gay while an undergraduate (1996), and that harrowing experience shaped his public persona and priorities as much as his formal education. He also makes use of his season tickets to Goodison Park as often as his schedule permits.
