Harriet Josephine Rosa Siad Steel was born in London in 1980 to Frederick (Freddie) Steel and Alexandra Rosa Siad Jadue a Chilean of Palestinian Christian descent. Harriet’s maternal family who were supporters of the Allende government fled the military coup.

Harriet father worked in the building trade and was trade union organiser and was a Labour activist he meet Harriet’s mother at a socialist international meeting in London. Harriet’s mother became a Spanish teacher.

Harriet’s father and mother moved back to his own town of Abertillery shortly after Harriet’s birth to raise her in a more rural area. He worked on their family hill farm as well as local construction later serving on the local council. Harriet’s mother taught in the local secondary school.

Harriet growing up in a politically active family entered student politics at university. During her university years she served on the nec of the Labour Party youth wing and the National Union of Students. She was an opponent of the Iraq war and the Labour party’s higher education policy. Between 2004 and 2006 Harriet was president of the National Union of Students.

After university Harriet worked on environment projects and served on the NEC as a socialist society rep.

In 2010 Harriet was selected as the candidate to Blaenau Gwent defeating the sitting People’s Voice mp, one of three labour gains during the election. During her first term as an mp she campaigned for greater focus on green issues and fighting austerity. In 2015 she increased her majority significantly calling on Labour to put forward a left wing programme for government.

Harriet is fluent in English, Welsh, Spanish and Arabic. Her hobbies include gardening, macramé, baking and foreign films
