Felix James Corrington (b. 1937) is a Liberal Democrat MP from North Cornwall. He was born in Launceston to James (a Liberal MP for North Cornwall from 1932 to 1939) and Rose Corrington, as their second-oldest child and first son. James Corrington would end up serving as an officer in the Second World War, and died on the beaches of Normandy in 1944. Nonetheless, Felix and his siblings were raised in the upper class family of his mother and grandparents.
Felix would go on to attend some of the best schools in the United Kingdom. He studied at Eton and then went on to pursue a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford, graduating from that program in 1958. A bright student, he was encouraged to pursue a career in academia and the idea suited his temperament. He eventually earned a DPhil in Economics from Oxford in 1963.
Following in the footsteps of his late Liberal father, Felix was interested in the liberal tradition in economics and became a notable economist focusing on the history of economic thought and public economics. He served as an academic at the London School of Economics before returning to Oxford as a Professor. Highly critical of the economic policies of “muddling through” in the late 1970s, he became a public intellectual in that era. Corrington resisted efforts by many in the Conservative Party to recruit him away from the Liberals in the 1980s, and would be a founding member of the Liberal Democrats in 1988.
On the one-year anniversary of the party’s founding in 1989, Corrington published his magnum opus, The Liberal Legacy: Where We Have Been and Where We Must Go. This book was at once accessible to a lay audience but also made important contributions to liberal thought from a market liberal perspective. Standing for the first time in 1992 as a candidate in North Cornwall, he was elected at the age of 55.
A leading economic voice within the Liberal Democrat parliamentary party, Felix Corrington also delivered notable speeches on electoral reform and Cornish devolution in the House of Commons. These remain pet issues of his to this day.
Felix is married to Theresa, and the couple have two adult children. He is a member of a nonconformist Protestant congregation, and lives in his hometown of Launceston.
