Gary William Woodley was born in Isleworth, West London, on 14th September 1955 to Bert and Marina (née Lascelles) Woodley.

Gary was educated at Isleworth Grammar School, before reading PPE at Balliol College, Oxford. Woodley was a member of the Oxford University Labour Club, and worked for the party as a staffer following his graduation. He later worked in the research department of the advocacy group Transport 2000.

In 1982, Woodley was elected to his local council, Hounslow London Borough Council, and was successfully re-elected and the two following election. In 1992, he was selected as the Labour candidate for Feltham and Heston in the same borough, and defeated the sitting Conservative MP Patrick Ground.

In parliament, Woodley spend his first term as a PPS, before taking a government office when Labour won power in 1997. He has served as Undersecretary of State and later Minister of State in the Department for the Environment, Transport and the Regions. He now works at the Home Office.

Gary is married to Diane (née Marsh), with whom he has two children, William and Joanne. He enjoys cycling, chess and following the (mis)adventures of Brentford FC.
