Statement from Pearl MacBay, MP

Labour needs to end the infighting now. I want to thank Jeremy Corbyn for his leadership of our party. While far from perfect, Jeremy brought people into our movement and inspired so many people to engage with politics, many for the first time. We cannot dismiss that or attempt to discredit it.

For too long, the Labour Party has been perceived to only be interested in itself, not the people and the needs of the United Kingdom. In order to be a credible opposition party, that needs to change. Immediately. I believe the time has come for generational change in the leadership of our party, and I look forward to seeing who will emerge to seek the job. Whomever it is must unite our party and all of us, regardless of our factions and ideology, must turn our fire where it belongs: on the Conservative government that repeatedly and consistently fails our country.

We have a unique opportunity ahead of us. We must be bold enough to seize it.

On the Labour Leadership

"The people of the United Kingdom are crying out for help after nearly a decade of disastrous Tory government. Labour must seize the opportunity and be a broad coalition that unites the country and presents a bold vision to voters. Infighting, petty squabbles and only focusing on ourselves has failed us, and more importantly, has failed the people of the United Kingdom who deserve an effective opposition.

I consider all the candidates for the Labour leadership to be eminently qualified. Whomever wins will have a large job ahead of them and they will have my support. But leadership races matter and I believe the best way for our party to come together is for Emily Greenwood to be our next leader. Not only because the political leadership of our country is in dire need of generational change, but because Emily's five point plan for Britain is the right plan at the right time.

We are in challenging times. As we navigate the post-Brexit world, we must be open to knocking down global barriers. We must be compassionate to those who need a helping hand. We must act now to reduce climate change. These are issues that cannot - and must not - wait.

I am proud to be part of a party that will has diverse voices and opinions. I will serve dutifully whomever wins the leadership, but in these times, we need a steady, calming hand to steer the ship of state. Emily Greenwood is the woman to do it, and I look forward to working with her to defeat the Tories and restore our country to a more just place."
